To recruit the target audience, a recruitment strategy should be developed. A recruitment strategy should include which referral channels are chosen and why, as well as how to gain the referral channels interest in becoming involved and collaborating in promoting their client’s mental health and wellbeing.
Additionally, the recruitment strategy should also include methods to be used, and steps involved in referring the target audience to the AoP programme.
Referral methods can include:
- paper-based or digital prescription (similar to medicine prescriptions) issued by doctors or psychotherapists.
- direct referral of participants to the programme by larger referral channels such as social or welfare institutions e.g. unemployment agencies, or social- or health-workers employed in the health and social sectors.
- self-referral may also be a possibility for some AoP programmes.
The appropriate referral method depends on the target audience, local context, and the selected referral channels. See some example below. For a more detailed description of recruitment channels and different strategies look in Resources (the material will be ready in June 2025)
“A legal framework for cooperation between recruitment channels and the municipality was initiated. The goal of this framework was to clearly define the roles and tasks of each partner across the cultural, social and health sectors. Written agreements involving recruitment channels, cultural institutions, the participants were established with the municipality. The legal framework was to ensure correct exchange of information, especially related to the involved participants, as well as stating the renumeration for the involved specialists and the staff in the culture institutions”. “A recruitment panel consisting of rehab coordinators, the Coordinating Association, the Employment Agency and the Swedish Social Insurance Agency were involved in assisted in selecting participants for the AoP programme. It is a well-functioning group, that also assists in other cases for patients, who need rehabilitation for various reasons”. Region of Norrbotten AoP programme.
Direct contact was established with recruitment channels who had direct contact to the target audience. Awareness of the AoP programme consisted of presenting the programme’s aim and concept to certain recruiting channels, and sending mails to various departments informing them of the programme. Key persons from various recruitment channels were invited to participate in chosen culture activities, where they gained a deeper understanding of the AoP programme”.
