Arts on Prescription Guide

Planning the Structure of the Programme and Activities

When planning the activities for an 8–12-week AoP-programme, various aspects need to be taken into account to ensure the programme runs smoothly and meets the needs of the target audience.

Aspects to consider may include: the types of non-therapy arts genres to be offered, the overall structure of the programme (frequency and length of activities), and the order of the different activities throughout the programme. Certain programmes have 2-weeks blocks of music activities followed by 2-weeks art activities and so on. Other programmes have two different activites a week for example music on Tuesday and art on Thursday over a 4-week period,  changing to theatre and crafts for the next 4- weeks.

Alternatively, appropiate culture and arts activities may already exist in the community. Engage culture and arts facilitators who may have existing activities and expertise in facilitating that can be incorporated into your AoP programme. Applying local creative opportunities can cultivate and renew a sense of community belonging among participants and promote a sustainable use and exchange of local resources.
